so what is the hypeGulmarg literally means “Meadow of Flowers”, named for the lush greenery, flowers, fruit and nut orchids that are scattered throughout the highlands during the warmer months.
There is plenty to do and see – that is,
when you take a rare break from carving virgin lines down the mountain.
Culture
The Gulmarg markets and villages are a vibrant burst
of local culture. Our guides will even take you to visit their village if you want a rare day off from mind-blowing powder, where you can sample freshly baked goods from our family bakery. You can also experience the diversity of religions and visit Shrines, Mosques, Temples and Churches.
Cuisine
Kashmiri and Indian cuisine are similar, with spices, chicken,
lamb and fresh vegetables served with rice and newly baked naan. For a change and an adventure, the markets are just a 15min stroll away, where, for pocket change, you can choose from mountains of grapes, crates of pomegranates, barrels of just-picked walnuts and freshly baked goods.
Things to do
At night, during mid-winter, some go ice-skating under the
moonlight, some compete in cross-country ski races, while others watch local wildlife. However, a word of warning from the dedicated – the gondola opens at 8.00am and closes at 4.00pm during mid-winter, so we’re generally up at 7.00am and ready to rock by 8.30am. Take it from us – in order to truly take advantage of Gulmarg, all you’ll want after a long day is a hot meal and a warm bed. Before long, you’ll be dreaming about the lines you’ll be carving the next day.
Accommodation & living
The hotels in Gulmarg are quaint, well appointed, almost
bed-and-breakfast like. They are the equivalent of adequately equipped accommodation in Western countries, with helpful, friendly service and everything you can reasonably expect in amenities. Occasionally the lights will go out, but that’s part of the fun. Accomodation is growing and evolving every year with the influx of tourists and we’re sure you’ll enjoy your stay. Krystalline has special relationships with most hotels, allowing the best location, rooms and service. In our most popular hotels, you can ski straight from the front door of your hotel to the gondola. Now that’s true luxury.
Meals
Our hotels and private huts generally have the best food in
Gulmarg, which is handy both before and after a huge day on the mountain.
Breakfast is included in all of our packages, however dinner is not included but can be arranged as a package option. This approach provides our clients with the flexibility to choose from a number of great restaurants for the main affair... dinner. It is widely knows in Gulmarg that restaurants generally charge the same price as hotels, with hotels widely known to serve the best food. We highly recommend that you drink bottled water. Remember that nothing is better than starting your evening with a fresh cup of Kashmiri kahwa after a long day in the snow. Note: All meals are inclusive on the Dal Lake house boat.
